Bassirima Soro (K-Bass)

Bassirima, better known as K-Bass, was born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast Africa. Overcoming poverty, he made his way to the US and is now a US citizen.

K-Bass’s late father and mother descend from families in which music is the center of everything, the family tradition. Through music and dance they celebrate birth and death, comfort the living, resolve conflicts and share their knowledge and love. His parents supported him in getting an education while saying, “Music is our tradition. The time will come when you will play music and not even know how it happened.” After many years of competing in cross country and marathon running, and even now being a nursing student, the center of his life has become music.

K-Bass has been influenced by zouglou music and has always loved reggae, particularly Alpha Blondy, a fellow Ivorian. Now that he speaks English and is able to understand the message of Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, and A Jah Man, he relates to it even more.

K-Bass is an Afro-pop and Reggae vocalist, a song writer singing in Bambara, English and French. He has performed in concerts, playback and TV, as was formerly lead singer with Spirit Familia. Now settled in Tucson, AZ, he is currently chief vocalist with Key Ingredients of African Soul, performing Reggae and Afro-pop music as well as playing djembe and dun-dun-ba and singing with Planet Djembe. His first solo album “Too Much Negativity” was released on April 25, 2009.

We'd like to give special thanks to Adama Dembele, a master drummer from Ivory Coast, who is our long distance mentor and teacher. He has been instrumental in helping us get where we are and always adds something special when he is able to perform with us.
